The Purple Giant from Brazil – Impressive in Size and Coloration
Pamphobeteus platyomma, originating from Brazil, is one of the most impressive terrestrial tarantulas, valued for its size and beautiful coloration. Often called the Fluffy Giant Tarantula or Brazilian Purple, it stands out with its massive build and dark, velvety body with distinct purple, blue, or pink reflections, especially in males after reaching maturity. This species has a moderate speed and generally calm disposition, making it suitable for intermediate keepers.
Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
P. platyomma inhabits humid rainforests and semi-arid areas of Brazil. It leads a terrestrial lifestyle, digging deep burrows in the ground or using natural crevices and tree roots as shelter.
Morphology and Size
Adult Pamphobeteus platyomma specimens reach a leg span of 20-22 cm (8-8.5 inches), making them one of the largest tarantulas. Their body is massive, covered with dense, dark (black or very dark brown) hairs. Males, upon reaching sexual maturity (the so-called "hook"), develop spectacular, metallic purple, blue, or pink coloration on their carapace and legs, which is their most characteristic feature. Females typically remain darker, with subtle reflections.
Behavior and Character
P. platyomma is a species with moderate speed and a generally calm, though alert, temperament. It rarely shows aggression, preferring to flee or kick urticating hairs from its abdomen. These hairs can cause significant irritation and itching on human skin. Bites are rare, and their venom is mild and does not pose a serious medical threat to humans, comparable to a bee sting.
Feeding Habits
In nature, their diet consists of insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. In captivity, they should be fed appropriately sized feeder insects, such as large crickets, roaches (e.g., dubia roaches), or locusts. Adults can be fed once a week or once every two weeks; they have a significant appetite.
Lifespan
Female Pamphobeteus platyomma are long-lived and can live from 15 to 20 years under optimal breeding conditions. Males have a much shorter lifespan, typically 3 to 5 years.
Husbandry Requirements
Terrarium: For an adult specimen, a spacious terrarium of at least 40x30x30 cm is required, due to its size and mass. Good ventilation is crucial.
Substrate: A substrate layer of about 15-20 cm deep should be placed at the bottom of the terrarium, e.g., coconut fiber or a mixture of peat and vermiculite, which retains moisture well and allows for digging.
Temperature: The ideal temperature is 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F).
Humidity: The recommended humidity is 70-80%. This can be maintained by misting part of the substrate every few days.
Hideout: A permanent hideout should be provided (e.g., a piece of bark, half a coconut shell).
Water: A shallow water dish should always be available and regularly refilled.
Suitable for Hobbyists
Pamphobeteus platyomma is a species intended for intermediate keepers. Its size, urticating hairs, and the need to provide appropriate conditions require some experience, but the coloration of males rewards all efforts.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
