The Mysterious Giant from Venezuela – Massive and Demanding
Lasiodorides polycuspidatus, originating from Venezuela, is a lesser-known but equally impressive species of the genus Lasiodorides. Sometimes referred to as the Venezuelan Black Tarantula or Black Venom, it stands out with its massive build and dark coloration. This is a species of great strength and potentially more defensive in nature than its cousins from Brazil, intended for experienced keepers.
Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
L. polycuspidatus inhabits humid and semi-arid areas of Venezuela. It lives a terrestrial life, digging deep burrows in the ground or using natural crevices as shelter.
Morphology and Size
Adult Lasiodorides polycuspidatus specimens can reach a leg span of up to 18-20 cm (7-8 inches), and some females may be even larger. Their body is massive, covered with dense, dark hairs, usually black or very dark brown, which gives them a formidable appearance.
Behavior and Character
L. polycuspidatus is a species of great strength and potentially more defensive temperament than L. parahybana. When threatened, it can be quick and attempt to attack. Like other Lasiodora and Lasiodorides, it possesses urticating hairs on its abdomen, which it can kick off in defense. Its venom is stronger than that of typical New World tarantulas, and while not life-threatening, it can cause pain, muscle cramps, and numbness. For this reason, no direct contact with this species is recommended, and all manipulations should be performed with utmost caution.
Feeding Habits
In nature, their diet consists of insects, small reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. In home husbandry, they should be fed appropriately sized feeder insects, such as large crickets, cockroaches (e.g., Argentine), or locusts. Adult specimens can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.
Lifespan
Female Lasiodorides polycuspidatus are long-lived and, under optimal breeding conditions, can live for 15 to 20 years. Males have a significantly shorter lifespan, usually 3 to 5 years.
Husbandry Requirements
Terrarium: A spacious terrarium of at least 35x25x25 cm is required for an adult specimen. Good ventilation is crucial.
Substrate: A layer of substrate about 15-20 cm deep, such as coco fiber, which retains moisture well and allows for extensive burrowing, should be placed at the bottom of the terrarium.
Temperature: The ideal temperature is 22 to 26°C.
Humidity: Recommended humidity is 70-80%. This can be maintained by misting parts of the substrate every few days.
Hide: A permanent hide (e.g., a piece of bark, half a coconut) should be provided.
Water: A shallow water dish should always be available and regularly refilled.
Suitable for Hobbyists
Lasiodorides polycuspidatus is a species intended exclusively for experienced and responsible keepers. Its potential aggressiveness, urticating hairs, and venom strength require the utmost caution, knowledge, and experience in safely handling tarantulas.
