African Sprinter – Fast, Aggressive, and Dazzlingly Beautiful

Heteroscodra maculata, originating from West and Central Africa (including Ghana, Togo, Cameroon), is one of the most sought-after and challenging terrestrial tarantulas (with burrowing and climbing tendencies) in terraristics. Known as the African Ornamental Tarantula or Ornamental Spider, it stands out with its unique black and white or gray and black marbled coloration, which perfectly camouflages it in its natural environment. This species is known for extreme speed, a very defensive and aggressive nature, and potent venom, intended only for experienced and responsible keepers.

Natural Environment and Geographic Origin

H. maculata inhabits humid tropical forests of Africa, where it digs deep burrows in the ground, often under tree roots or in rock crevices. Although it is a terrestrial species, it often climbs and establishes nests in tree hollows or under tree bark at low heights.

Morphology and Size

Adult Heteroscodra maculata specimens reach a leg span of up to 13-15 cm (5-6 inches). Their body is robustly built, covered with dense hairs. The coloration is a white, creamy, or light gray base with irregular black or dark gray spots and patterns, forming a marbled or leopard-like design across the entire body, including the legs and abdomen.

Behavior and Character

H. maculata is a species known for extreme speed and exceptional aggression. It is extremely timid and almost immediately flees in a panic. However, if cornered or feeling threatened, it assumes a very aggressive defensive posture, raising its front legs and displaying its long fangs, then striking with lightning speed. Its venom is potent and can cause significant systemic symptoms in humans, such as intense pain, severe muscle spasms, numbness, swelling, as well as nausea, vomiting, and flu-like symptoms that can persist for several days. It does not possess urticating hairs. For this reason, no direct contact with this species is recommended, and all manipulations in the terrarium should be carried out with the utmost caution, always using long tweezers and in a safe, controlled environment.

Feeding Habits

In nature, their diet consists of large insects and other small invertebrates. In home keeping, they should be fed appropriately sized feeder insects, such as crickets, cockroaches (e.g., Argentine, Madagascar), or locusts. Adult specimens can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.

Lifespan

Female Heteroscodra maculata are long-lived and can live from 10 to 15 years under optimal breeding conditions. Males have a significantly shorter lifespan, usually 2 to 4 years.

Husbandry Requirements

Terrarium: For an adult specimen, a spacious terrarium of at least 30x20x25 cm is required, providing space for both burrowing and potential climbing. Excellent ventilation is crucial.

Substrate: A deep layer of substrate (at least 15 cm), such as coconut fiber or a mixture of peat and vermiculite, should be placed at the bottom of the terrarium. This will retain moisture well and allow for the digging of elaborate burrows.

Hideout: A permanent, large hideout should be provided (e.g., a piece of bark, half a coconut, a ceramic pot). It is also worth adding vertical elements, such as pieces of bark, for the spider to climb on.

Temperature: The optimal temperature is 24-28°C.

Humidity: Maintain high humidity at 75-85% by regularly misting the terrarium and keeping the substrate moist.

Water: A shallow water dish should always be available and refilled regularly.

Suitable for Hobbyists

Heteroscodra maculata is a species intended only for very experienced and responsible keepers. Its extreme speed, aggression, and venom potency require the highest caution, knowledge, and experience in safely handling tarantulas. This is not a species for beginners.

Why Choose This Species?

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, all species available in our offer come from verified sources and are safe for home breeding. We do not sell species with venom that is life-threatening to humans.

We use special, secure packaging that protects the animal during transport. Shipping is carried out according to the highest standards, so that the spider arrives in perfect condition.

Every spider needs an appropriate terrarium with proper substrate, a hide, water, and ventilation. In the product descriptions, you will find guidelines regarding the requirements of each species.

We do not recommend direct contact. Spiders are animals for observation, not for touching. For their safety and your comfort, it is best to limit yourself to admiring them in the terrarium.

Adult tarantulas usually only need to be fed once every 7–10 days; younger ones more often. Their diet consists of feeder insects such as crickets or cockroaches.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
