Poecilotheria Metallica (Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tree Spider)

From 100,00 zł

Jewel from India: Unearthly Blue and Extraordinary Speed

Poecilotheria metallica, originating from a highly restricted area in southeastern India, is a true icon in the world of terraristics. Known as the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental or Metallic Blue Tarantula, it captivates with its mesmerizing, metallic blue coloration and dynamic temperament. This species is highly sought after by collectors, but due to its speed and potentially strong venom, it is a choice exclusively for experienced breeders.

Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin

P. metallica is endemic to a small region in India, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, near the city of Gooty. It inhabits dry deciduous forests, where it leads a typically arboreal lifestyle. It builds its webs and shelters in tree hollows, under bark, or in crevices, often forming colonies in suitable locations.

Morphology and Size

Adult Poecilotheria metallica reach a leg span of 15-18 cm (6-7 inches). Their body, especially the carapace and legs, shimmers with a dazzling, metallic blue color, making them one of the most spectacular tarantulas in the world. A characteristic black pattern is visible on the abdomen, and subtle dark bands on the legs. The intensity of the blue may vary depending on the individual and lighting, but it is always a breathtaking sight.

Behavior and Temperament

P. metallica is a species known for its extreme speed and agility. It is a defensive spider that, when threatened, first tries to escape, but if cornered, will not hesitate to attack. Its venom is stronger than that of New World tarantulas and can cause significant systemic symptoms in humans, such as intense pain, muscle cramps, numbness, nausea, and flu-like symptoms that can persist for several days. For this reason, no direct contact with this species is recommended, and all manipulations should be performed with the utmost caution.

Feeding Habits

In nature, their diet consists of insects and other small vertebrates that they hunt in the tree canopy. In home breeding, they should be given appropriately sized feeder insects, such as crickets, cockroaches (e.g., Turkish or Argentine cockroaches), or locusts. It is important that the food is alive to stimulate the spider to hunt. Adult specimens can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.

Lifespan

Female Poecilotheria metallica are long-lived and can live from 10 to 15 years under proper breeding conditions. Males have a much shorter lifespan, typically 3 to 5 years.

Breeding Requirements

Terrarium: Due to their arboreal lifestyle, a tall terrarium (so-called "arboreal") is necessary, with dimensions of at least 20x20x30 cm for juveniles and 30x30x45 cm or more for adults. Excellent ventilation is crucial.

Decor: Provide numerous branches, pieces of bark, or bamboo tubes, which will serve as platforms for building nests and hiding.

Substrate: A thin layer of substrate (5-10 cm) at the bottom of the terrarium (e.g., coco fiber) will help maintain humidity.

Temperature: The optimal temperature is 24-28°C.

Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels of 70-85% by misting the terrarium daily.

Water: A shallow water dish or regular misting of water droplets on the terrarium walls.

Suitable for Hobbyists

Poecilotheria metallica is a species intended only for experienced and responsible breeders. Its extreme speed and venom strength require the utmost caution, knowledge, and experience in safe handling of tarantulas. It is not a species for beginners or those without adequate experience.

Why Choose This Species?

If you are an experienced breeder looking for a tarantula with one of the most spectacular colorations in the world, which will be a true gem in your collection, the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental is the ideal choice. Its extraordinary beauty and dynamic behavior make it one of the most fascinating and desirable species for observation.

Hobby Classic: Vivid Colors and Calm Temperament

Brachypelma hamorii, originating from the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico's Pacific coast, is one of the most recognized and beloved species in the world of tarantula keeping. Commonly known as the Mexican Redknee Tarantula, this species is famous for its vibrant coloration, gentle disposition, and longevity, making it a classic choice for beginner keepers.

Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin

B. hamorii is found in the tropical dry forests and shrublands of the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacán. In its natural environment, it digs burrows under fallen logs, rocks, or in dense undergrowth, where it seeks shelter from predators and extreme temperatures. It prefers stable humidity conditions, even during the dry season.

Morphology and Size

Adult Brachypelma hamorii reach a leg span of 13-15 cm (5-6 inches). Their bodies are intensely black, beautifully contrasting with the distinctive, bright orange-red "knees" (joints) on their legs. The abdomen and legs are covered with lighter hairs, which complete their unique appearance. Younger individuals are initially paler and acquire their full, intense coloration as they mature.

Behavior and Character

B. hamorii is considered one of the most gentle and calm tarantulas. It rarely shows aggression and usually does not react with panic to the keeper's presence. Like other New World tarantulas, it may kick urticating hairs from its abdomen in self-defense. These hairs, although not dangerous, can cause itching and skin irritation, so caution is advised. Bites are extremely rare and do not carry serious health consequences for humans, but they can be painful.

Feeding Habits

In nature, they prey on insects, other spiders, and small invertebrates. In home keeping, their diet should consist of live feeder insects, such as crickets, cockroaches (e.g., Turkistan, Argentine), and locusts. Younger individuals are given appropriately smaller portions. Feeding once a week or once every two weeks is usually sufficient for adults.

Lifespan

Female Brachypelma hamorii are extremely long-lived and, under optimal conditions, can live from 20 to 30 years, making them lifelong pets. Males live significantly shorter, usually 4 to 6 years. The long lifespan of females is one of the main attractions of this species for keepers.

Keeping Requirements

Terrarium: For an adult specimen, a terrarium approximately 30x20x20 cm is sufficient. Providing adequate space for movement and hiding opportunities is crucial.

Substrate: A substrate layer 10-15 cm deep, e.g., coco fiber, which allows for digging but is not too wet.

Temperature: The optimal keeping temperature is 24-28°C.

Humidity: Maintain moderate humidity at 60-70%. Part of the substrate can be slightly damp, but avoid over-wetting. Occasional misting is sufficient.

Hide: It is essential to provide the spider with a stable hide (e.g., a piece of bark, a ceramic pot) where it can feel safe.

Water: A shallow water dish should always be available.

Suitable for Hobbyists

Brachypelma hamorii is widely recognized as one of the best species for beginner keepers. Its gentle disposition, ease of care, long lifespan, and impressive appearance make it an ideal choice for anyone looking to start their tarantula adventure. Although it kicks urticating hairs, it does so rarely and usually only in situations of extreme stress.

Why Choose This Species?

If you are looking for a calm, beautiful, and easy-to-care-for tarantula that will be with you for many years, the Mexican Redknee Tarantula is an excellent choice. Its iconic appearance and friendly nature make it not just a pet, but a true ornament to any collection.

Water: A shallow water dish should always be available.

Suitable for Hobbyists

Lasiodora parahybana is an excellent choice for intermediate keepers and ambitious beginners. Its size, impressive appearance, and generally calm disposition make it a fascinating species to observe. However, it is important to be aware of the urticating hairs and exercise caution during handling. This species has easy-to-meet requirements and rarely causes problems in captivity.

Why Choose This Species?

By choosing Lasiodora parahybana, you gain not only an impressive tarantula with a majestic appearance but also a pet with a predictable temperament and a long lifespan. Its adaptability and relatively simple care make it a satisfying addition to any collection. If you are looking for a large, striking, and relatively easy-to-keep tarantula, the Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater is a perfect choice!
